Sketch, 1896, of the life of Dr. John Tankard, written by his son, briefly recounts Dr. John Tankard's medical studies in Virginia and in Scotland after the Revolutionary War and his medical practice in Northampton County, Va. Also briefly describes his service as an army surgeon with General Muhlenberg and what he saw at the siege of Yorktown, with an anecdote about Washington, Lafayette and De Grasse and the disposition of the French Navy at Yorktown.

In response to the expansion of the Continental Army the number of staff was increased and reorganized in 1776. Changes included the creation of a new unit to supplement George Washington's personal staff. This special unit, the Commander in Chief's Guard, was formed on March 12, 1776 with Captain Caleb Gibbs (formerly adjutant of the 14th Continental Regiment and appointed Aid to Major General Greene) as commander.
